How Does Anxiety Affect My Child's Learning?

At Lemon Drops Kids Therapy we regularly speak with caregivers who have a young person struggling with anxiety and may be falling behind at school.

Understandably they are hesitant about attending sessions during school time as they are concerned that this will further interrupt their learning.

Here is why we suggest that starting sessions, even during school hours, is more beneficial than waiting for the out of school hours appointments;

Anxiety impairs both the memory and the attentional processes as it overrides cognitive functions. As anxiety increases, capacity to concentrate on academic tasks and solve problems decreases.

When experiencing anxiety, being in school doesn't necessarily mean this young person is able to learn.

Getting anxiety under control first can be the best way forward in helping a young person thrive in their learning.
